"I want to invest. I just don’t know if I have enough money I need to get started."
This question is very subjective.
This is definitely something that I have been asked the most in all my years of investing. I would add as simple as this question seems it is the most complicated one to tackle.
Here’s why:
It is because once someone actually finds out what they can afford to invest they autonomously spend the money on other things. All the advice and planning that Iv’e given them goes poof exploding into little clouds of Starbuck dreams and Louis Vuitton purses.
Human nature I suppose. Lack of discipline. Parts of the brain acting in concert overthrowing one’s kingdom of logic. I can go all day with these but I’ll get back to the subject. The advice that I am going to give you is going to sound very simple.
Too simple that you’re going to realize that you’ve already thought about it yourself and have actually entertained the idea of putting it into motion. But for some reason you never did.
Why was that?
How much money do you spend on eating out every week?
Did you know that 1 average American spends about $67.00 eating out every week?
Let’s do some math.
$67 a week = $67 x 4weeks = $268
$268 Month = $268 x 12 months = $3216.00 Per year.
Remember thats 1 single average American. Do the math for a family of 4.
Now by no means would I suggest to not stuff your face on the daily with fast food. I would never suggest that. But this number really does suggest what one can potentially have to invest. Let’s do another one!
How much does the average American spend on Starbucks?
Did you know that the average American spends about $92.00 a month on coffee.
$23 a week = $23 x 4weeks = $92.00
$92.00 Month = $92.00 x 12 months = $1104.00 Per year.
Remember thats for 1 Single Average American. Go ahead and have your cup of Joe. More bitcoin for me to buy. :0)
How much Money does the average American spend on entertainment?
The average American spends about $75.00 a week on entertainment.
$75.00 a week = $75.00 x 4 = $300
$300.00 Month = $300 x 12 months = $3600.00 Per year.
Once again remember this is for one average American. Do the math if you have a family of 3-4. Keep in mind this particular number doesn’t include vacations. Those in itself can cost anywhere from $500-$2500 alone not including the $3600.00
These being only 3 examples I’m sure I’ve got the wheels turning in your head. For the record in no way am I saying to not eat out or to have a cup of java or to hit the town hard on the weekends. The point of this exercise was for people to see where some of their hard earned money is going.
By all means spend it how you want. But maybe just maybe. You’ve realized that you just might have some greenbacks to start investing. Try it out. Grab a piece of paper and figure out your expenses. Figure out where your money is going. Or maybe you already figured this out and had a plan to put in motion but for some reason you never did.
